<image:caption>The Pattons In 1853, Sarah Lindsay Patton inherited The Meadows from her grandfather. The Meadows then became home to the larger Patton family who moved in bulk to The Meadows at the outbreak of the Civil War. Sarah and her husband John Mercer Patton welcomed the family, including Patton's widowed mother whose husband served as Governor of Virginia. All five Patton sons served the Confederacy during the Civil War, two sacrificing their lives on the battlefield: Col. George Patton, Sr. died at Third Winchester (he is the grandfather of Gen. George Patton of WWII fame) and Col. W. Tazewell Patton who died leading his troops at Gettysburg.</image:caption>
